Hematologic malignancies of the larynx: A single institution review
American Journal of Otolaryngology - Head and Neck Medicine and Surgery Nov 21, 2019
Dewan K, et al. - In individuals treated in a tertiary care laryngology practice, researchers presented a case series of primary hematologic malignancies of the larynx, as well as analyzed the literature on the primary hematologic malignancy of the larynx. The sample consisted of individuals in a tertiary academic laryngeal practice with hematologic malignancy of the larynx presenting over a 10 year period. Between 2009 and 2019, 12 individuals were found to have a primary presentation of a hematologic malignancy within the larynx. The most common finding was a submucosal mass, and the most common symptom was hoarseness. Larynx hematological malignancies are uncommon but can be treated. Biopsy is the foundation of diagnosis, and imaging can be helpful in excluding conditions with similar physical appearance (ie, laryngocele). Prognosis is based on diagnosis but is generally positive.
