Heavy-load lifting: Acute response in breast cancer survivors at risk for lymphedema
Medicine and Science in Sports and Exercise Oct 12, 2017
Bloomquist K, et al. - A randomized, cross-over equivalence trial is done to compare acute responses in arm swelling and associated symptoms after low- and heavy-load resistance exercise among women at risk of lymphedema while receiving adjuvant taxane-based chemotherapy. The current study showed that the low- and heavy-load resistance exercise elicited similar acute responses in arm swelling and breast cancer-associated lymphedema symptoms in women at risk for lymphedema receiving adjuvant taxane-based chemotherapy. These represent important preliminary outcomes, which can be used to inform the future prospective assessment of the long-term impacts of repeated exposure to heavy-load resistance exercise.
