Heart transplant outcomes in patients who receive hepatitis B virus (HBV) positive donor hearts

Genyk PA, Liu GS, Nattiv J, et al. - Recipients who received HBV+ donor hearts were compared with those who received HBV- donor hearts regarding their long-term transplant outcomes. Querying UNOS registry, researchers retrieved data of 1,141 patients receiving a heart transplant from hepatitis B core antibody (HBcAb)+ donors and 53,192 patients who received a heart transplant from HBcAb- donors. The donor HBV+ cohort comprised 1,141 patients in and the donor HBV- cohort comprised 53,192 patients. Outcomes revealed worse overall survival in association with use of HBV+ donors in heart transplantation vs use of HBV- donors.
