Hearing outcomes in children of diabetic pregnancies
International Journal of Pediatric Otorhinolaryngology Feb 06, 2020
Lee JA, et al. - Considering that children of diabetic pregnancies (CDPs) encounter numerous risk factors for hearing loss (HL), researchers examined the hearing outcomes of CDPs on a population scale. The prevalence, severity, and progression of HL in CDPs were compared against children of non-diabetic pregnancies (CNDPs) who served as controls utilizing the Audiological and Genetic Database. Of the 311 CDPs, 71.1% showed evidence of HL vs 45.5% in CNDPs. CDPs were similarly influenced by common otologic conditions like acute otitis media, chronic otitis media, and Eustachian tube dysfunction compared with CNDPs. According to findings, CDPs face heightened risks of developing HL, especially bilateral and sensorineural hearing loss (SNHL). Of the comorbidities assessed, CDPs with hyperbilirubinemia, perinatal asphyxia, or congenital heart disease showed higher risk of SNHL. Close audiologic follow-up for these children was recommended, particularly those with complicated birth histories or additional medical problems.
