Hearing outcomes following Type 3 tympanoplasty with stapes columella grafting in canal wall down mastoidectomy
Annals of Otology, Rhinology & Laryngology Apr 08, 2019
Wood CB, et al. - In this retrospective cohort analysis, researchers assessed 19 candidates to study the hearing outcomes following Type 3 tympanoplasty with stapes columella grafting after canal wall down mastoidectomy and also to define the disease recurrence rates in such cases. In 37% of cases, they noticed the erosion of the otic capsule, posterior fossa plate, or tegmen highlighting the disease severity. They recorded previous otologic surgery in 95% of candidates. They found 26 ± 11 dB HL of the average short-term air-bone gap (ABG) with achievement of an ABG <20 dB in 26% and an ABG <30 dB in 58% of cases. They suggested such type of reconstruction a viable choice, especially when associated with low rates of revision surgery.
