Hearing and quality of life over time in vestibular schwannoma patients: Observation compared to stereotactic radiosurgery
Otology & Neurotology Aug 22, 2019
Miller LE, et al. - In this retrospective review involving 123 patients, researchers analyzed the quality of life changes for patients with vestibular schwannoma (VS) undergoing observation or stereotactic radiosurgery (SRS). Participants in the study included VS patients who had observed or had SRS and had at least two audiograms and Penn Acoustic Neuroma Quality of Life (PANQOL) surveys, a quality of life survey for VS patients. No significant difference was found in the rate of decline measured by pure-tone average and speech discrimination score. Investigators found that PANQOL scores in the observation group were greater at baseline than in the SRS group. In the observation group, however, PANQOL scores decreased over time, while PANQOL scores increased in the SRS group, resulting in PANQOL scores that were equivalent by the end of the follow-up.
