Healthy lifestyle, endoscopic screening, and colorectal cancer incidence and mortality in the United States: A nationwide cohort study
PLoS Medicine Feb 05, 2021
Wang K, Ma W, Wu K, et al. - Experts explored if the colorectal cancer (CRC)-preventive benefit of healthy lifestyle varies by endoscopic screening status, and how healthy lifestyle and endoscopic screening combined can improve CRC prevention. Lifestyle and endoscopic screening were evaluated biennially among 75,873 women (Nurses’ Health Study, 1988 to 2014) and 42,875 men (Health Professionals Follow-up Study, 1988 to 2014). The findings indicate that a healthy lifestyle, independent of endoscopic screening, is associated with lower CRC incidence and mortality. Compared with endoscopic screening alone, the integration of a healthy lifestyle with endoscopic screening can significantly improve CRC prevention, especially for proximal colon cancer.
