Journal of Clinical Endocrinology and Metabolism Sep 28, 2021

Riestenberg C, Jagasia A, Markovic D, et al. - The most common endocrine disorder of reproductive-aged women is polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS), which affects nearly 5%-20% of women of reproductive age. Along with a prior analysis, this work suggest that PCOS poses an economic burden at $8 billion annually in 2020 USD.

  • As per a previous estimate, when considering only the costs of the initial diagnosis and of reproductive endocrine morbidities, the economic burden of PCOS approximates $3.7 billion annually in 2020 USD.

  • PubMed, EmBase and Cochrane Library were searched for relevant studies.

  • Findings revealed that due to pregnancy-related and long-term morbidities associated with PCOS, the additional total healthcare-related economic burden is estimated to be $4.3 billion annually in 2020 USD.
