Healthcare providers experiences of using uterine balloon tamponade (UBT) devices for the treatment of post-partum hemorrhage: A meta-synthesis of qualitative studies
PLoS Neglected Tropical Diseases Mar 25, 2021
Finlayson K, Vogel JP, Althabe F, et al. - Via performing this review, researchers sought to recognize, appraise and synthesize available evidence concerning the views and experiences of healthcare providers using uterine balloon tamponade (UBT) to treat postpartum haemorrhage (PPH). They searched MEDLINE, CINAHL, PsycINFO, EMBASE, LILACS, AJOL, and reference lists of eligible studies published 1996–2019, using a predetermined search strategy, resulting in identification of 89 studies, of which 5 met the inclusion criteria. A variety of cadres (including midwives, medical officers and clinical officers) had reported their experience with using UBTs and identified administration of a simple UBT device as a practical and cost-effective strategy to the treatment of uncontrolled PPH, particularly in contexts where uterotonics were identified as ineffective or were unavailable or where access to surgery was not possible.
