Health utility values as an outcome measure in patients undergoing functional septorhinoplasty
JAMA Facial Plastic Surgery Sep 26, 2019
Gadkaree SK, Fuller JC, Justicz NS, et al. - Researchers examined if outcomes of septorhinoplasty could be assessed via determining health utility values (HUVs) derived from patient scores on the EuroQol 5-Dimension (EQ-5D) questionnaire. In this cohort study of 463 patients undergoing septorhinoplasty for nasal obstruction, the EQ-5D questionnaire were completed by the participants immediately before surgery and postoperatively at 2, 4, 6, and 12 months. They converted EQ-5D scores to HUVs using population-based data for individuals with chronic diseases. Analysis revealed a significant increase in the mean preoperative health utility value 12 months postsurgery. Outcomes suggest HUVs as valuable for measuring outcomes in patients undergoing septorhinoplasty, and an association of nasal obstruction with a substantial detriment to overall health in line with other chronic conditions.
