Health-related quality of life, sexuality and hormone status after laparoscopic Roux-En-Y gastric bypass in women
Obesity Surgery Oct 27, 2019
Paul R, et al. - Researchers sought to assess how bariatric surgery influences sex hormone levels, sexual function and health-related quality of life (HRQL) in women. This single-center study performed at a regional hospital in Sweden included 100 non-smoking women, undergoing laparoscopic Roux-en-Y gastric bypass. At 1-year follow-up, 68/100 reported a decrease in testosterone and increase in sex-hormone binding globulin, 53/100 reported an increase in desire, arousal, orgasm, satisfaction and total score domains for the Female Sexual Function Index, 47/100 reported improvement in Women’s Health Questionnaire domains concerning depressed mood, somatic symptoms, memory, anxiety, sexual behavior and attractiveness. Improvement in all domains in the Psychological General Well-being Inventory were recorded (N = 52) at follow-up; these included anxiety, depressed mood, positive well-being, self-control, general health, vitality and total score. Findings thereby suggest normalization of levels of sex hormones in women, and improvement in sexual function, health-related quality of life and psychological well-being among women after undergoing bariatric surgery.
