Health-related quality of life and long-term sequelae in survivors of epidermal necrolysis: An observational study of 57 patients
British Journal of Dermatology Oct 21, 2019
Ingen-Housz-Oro S, Alves A, Colin A, et al. - In this single-centre study, researchers used validated instruments to examine the long-term health-related quality of life (HRQoL) for survivors of epidermal necrolysis (EN). The study sample consisted of patients who were admitted for EN between 2010 and 2017. A total of 57 survivors of EN were interviewed through telephone at a median of 3·6 years (1·9–6·1) after hospital discharge. Data reported that the proportion of EN patients who had HAD-anxiety score ≥ 8 or HAD-depression score ≥ 5 was 54% and 21%, respectively. There was no difference in physical and mental outcomes between ICU admitted EN patients and septic shock survivors. Cutaneous, ocular, psychological, dental/oral, genital and respiratory, with median intensity on a visual analogue scale, were reported EN-specific sequelae. The research confirms EN's major burden and long-term impact on survivor quality of life and highlights the need for prolonged close follow-up after the acute phase.
