Health-related quality of life among breast cancer survivors and noncancer controls over 10 years: Pink SWAN
Cancer Mar 12, 2020
Avis NE, Levine B, Goyal N, et al. - In this study with 141 breast cancer survivors (BCS) and 2,086 controls, researchers assessed health-related quality of life (HRQL) from diagnosis to 10 years postdiagnosis among BCS, relative to women without cancer during the same period. They also explored BCS subgroups showing distinct HRQL trajectories. The participants were selected from the Study of Women's Health Across the Nation (SWAN), which represents a multiracial/ethnic cohort study including mid-life women evaluated nearly yearly from 1995 to 2015. The evaluation of HRQL was done with SF-36 Mental Component Summary and Physical Component Summary scores. For both scores, 2 trajectory groups were recognized among BCS. For the Mental Component Summary, consistently good and very low scores were seen in 88.4% and 11.6% of BCS, respectively. For the Physical Component Summary, good scores were reported in 73.9%, and consistently low scores in 26.1%. Findings revealed similar HRQL in the majority of BCS after 2 years as compared with HRQL in non-cancer controls, and subgroups of BCS continued to experience low HRQL. For long-term, low HRQL in BCS, prediagnosis stress, comorbidities, and smoking were identified as vulnerability factors.
