Health insurance status is related to risk of mortality and hospitalization in Korean maintenance hemodialysis patients: A longitudinal cohort study

American Journal of Nephrology Jan 17, 2021

Park HC, Kwon YE, Choi HY, et al. - Researchers examined the link of health insurance status as a proxy indicator for socioeconomic status (SES) upon death as well as hospitalization in patients receiving maintenance hemodialysis (HD). They utilized HD-quality evaluation data from the year of 2015 for obtaining demographic as well as clinical data. Participants were grouped into Medical Aid recipients (low SES) and National Health Insurance beneficiary (high SES). Cox proportional hazard model was used to assess death and hospitalization risk based on health insurance status. Among Korean maintenance HD patients, a raised risk of patient mortality and hospitalization was observed in relation to low SES as measured by health insurance status.
