Health and educational aspirations in adolescence: A longitudinal study in Finland
BMC Public Health Nov 13, 2019
Dobewall H, Lindfors P, Karvonen S, et al. - Researchers performed classroom surveys to determine whether there exists a link between health in adolescence and educational aspirations and if these links remain over and above sociodemographic background and academic achievement. From the Helsinki Metropolitan Region, they analyzed 5.614 students from the 7th (12–13 years,) up to the 9th grade (15–16 years) when the decision between the academic and the vocational track is made in Finland. Students self-reported health factors and sociodemographic background. They found a link of all examined health factors with adolescents’ educational aspirations. The persistence of these links over and above sociodemographic background and academic achievement was evident for the Strengths and Difficulties Questionnaire, daily health complaints, and self-rated health. The likelihood of choosing the academic track and the vocational track was more in students with better health in adolescence and in those who were less healthy, respectively. Overall, the health selection hypothesis in the creation of socioeconomic health disparities was supported because findings revealed that choice by health factors to different educational trajectories took place at early teenage much before adolescents determined their educational track. The significance of adolescence in this process was also demonstrated.
