Head and neck cancer reirradiation with interstitial high-dose-rate brachytherapy
Head & Neck Aug 16, 2018
Hegde JV, et al. - Using high-dose-rate (HDR) brachytherapy in head and neck cancer reirradiation, experts report on their experience regarding the preferential sparing of normal anatomic structures surrounding the radiation target. An excellent local control and encouraging overall survival (OS) could be provided by curative-intent HDR brachytherapy reirradiation. In view of the late toxicity rates, patient selection is vital, since treatment is especially useful for younger patients or those treated with salvage resection. Palliatively, 65% demonstrated a 6-month local control. Findings suggested an association of age >70 years with poorer OS. Prior salvage resection showed a trend toward improved local control and OS.
