Head and neck cancer patients: Rates, reasons, and risk factors for 30-day unplanned readmission
Otolaryngology-Head & Neck Surgery Jun 20, 2018
Ghiam MK, et al. - Researchers gauged the rates, risk factors, and complications for 30-day readmission among head and neck cancer (HNC) patients. Findings suggested that 11 ± 8.2 days was the mean time to readmission. Higher odds of readmission were seen in cancer of the hypopharynx, oropharynx, pharynx, and larynx vs oral cavity. Postoperative infection and surgical wound dehiscence, which most commonly presented on postdischarge days 4 to 5, were the most common surgical causes for readmission. High risks of readmission were noted in patients with HNC. The risk, rate, and reason for readmission were significantly influenced by the cancer subsite and procedure.
