HCV-infected individuals have higher prevalence of comorbidity and multimorbidity: A retrospective cohort study

BMC Infectious Diseases Aug 30, 2019

Cooper CL, Galanakis C, Donelle J, et al. - Researchers examined people with hepatitis C (HCV) infection for their morbidity burden. Further, they examined the relationship between multimorbidity and HCV treatment uptake and cure in the pre- and post-direct acting antiviral (DAA) era. Adults with HCV at The Ottawa Hospital Viral Hepatitis Program as of April 1, 2017, were linked to provincial health administrative data and for comparison, these adults were matched on age and sex to 5 Ottawa-area residents. The analysis revealed a higher incidence of comorbidity and multimorbidity among people with HCV vs the general population. Among those with HCV, HIV co-infection was reported in 4%, liver cirrhosis in 26%, DAA treatment in 47%, and HCV cure in 57%. While no correlation with multimorbidity of HCV treatment was evident, treatment was less frequently reported in people with substance use disorder. Results highlight the necessity for integrated, comprehensive models of care delivery for people with HCV.
