Haptoglobin 2 allele is associated with histologic response to vitamin E in patients with nonalcoholic steatohepatitis
Journal of Clinical Gastroenterology Oct 16, 2019
Banini BA, Cazanave SC, Yates KP, et al. - In patients with nonalcoholic steatohepatitis (NASH), experts aspired to explore whether haptoglobin (Hp) genotype associated with response to vitamin E (VitE). Participants in the study were 228 individuals receiving VitE or placebo in 2 clinical trials. To evaluate the impact of VitE compared with placebo, by Hp genotype (1-1, 2-1, or 2-2), on histologic features and laboratory markers of nonalcoholic fatty liver disease, comparing baseline to end of treatment values, regression analysis was used. The results obtained from this post hoc analysis indicate that Hp 2 allele was linked to greater histologic and biological improvement in NASH with VitE treatment vs the Hp 1 allele. Regression analysis demonstrated the incremental benefit of having Hp 2-2 or 2-1 compared with 1-1 for all liver enzyme.
