Haptoglobin 2 allele is associated with histologic response to vitamin E in subjects with nonalcoholic steatohepatitis
Journal of Clinical Gastroenterology Apr 10, 2019
Banini BA, et al. - In patients with nonalcoholic steatohepatitis (NASH), researchers determined whether haptoglobin (Hp) genotype associated with response to vitamin E (VitE). The study sample consisted of 228 patients receiving VitE or placebo in 2 clinical trials. To evaluate the effect of VitE vs placebo, by Hp genotype (1-1, 2-1, or 2-2), on histologic features and laboratory markers of nonalcoholic fatty liver disease, comparing baseline to end of treatment values, they used regression analysis. According to this post hoc analysis, Hp 2 allele was related to greater histologic and biological improvement in NASH with VitE treatment vs the Hp 1 allele. Regression analysis exhibited incremental benefit of having Hp 2-2 or 2-1 vs 1-1 for all liver enzyme.
