Haloperidol for the treatment of delirium in critically ill patients: A systematic review with meta-analysis and Trial Sequential Analysis
Acta Anaesthesiologica Scandinavica Nov 04, 2019
Barbateskovic M, Krauss SR, Collet MO, et al. - In this systematic review with meta-analysis and Trial Sequential Analysis, researchers determined the effects of haloperidol for treating delirium in critically ill patients by analyzing randomised clinical trials (RCTs) evaluating all-cause mortality, serious adverse reactions/events, days alive without delirium, health-related quality of life, cognitive function and delirium severity in correlation with receipt of haloperidol vs any intervention in critically ill patients with delirium. Also, QTc prolongation, delirium resolution and extrapyramidal symptoms were also addressed. Overall 8 RCTs with 11 comparisons (n = 951) were analyzed. They found sparse, low quality, and inconclusive evidence for the use of haloperidol to treat critically ill patients with delirium. Thus, no certain conclusions could be drawn about its benefits, harms, or neutral effects in these patients.
