Halo-vest immobilization in elderly odontoid fracture patients: Evolution in treatment modality and in-hospital outcomes
Journal of Spinal Disorders & Techniques Oct 27, 2017
DePasse JM, et al. - This study entailed an assessment of the utilization and efficacy of halo-vest (HV) immobilization for type II odontoid fractures from 2004 to 2014. Researchers reported decreased HV use for elderly odontoid fractures over the past decade at their institution and, a decline in the mortality and morbidity of elderly patients treated with HV. Improved patient selection and greater attention to respiratory care were suggested as the likely factors responsible for these findings. Overall, it was shown that HV immobilization of odontoid fractures in elderly patients can be as safe as cervical orthosis treatment in select patients.
