Half of unplanned readmissions following one or two-level anterior cervical decompression and fusion are unrelated to surgical site
Spine Apr 20, 2020
Sing DC, Vora M, Yue JK, et al. - In this retrospective review of a national database, researchers analyzed rates of readmission, and the timing and reasons for readmission after one to two level anterior cervical decompression and fusion (ACDF). Demographics, comorbidities, and procedural characteristics were obtained for all individuals undergoing one or two-level ACDF for degenerative indications identified by Current Procedural Terminology coding in the National Surgical Quality Improvement Program database. In order to identify risk factors correlated with complications or readmissions within 30 days of surgery, multivariate logistic regression analyses were performed. Data reported that 3.0% of patients were readmitted within 30 days, of which at least 49.7% were for reasons unrelated to the surgical site in this nationwide analysis of 18,833 ACDF cases. Pneumonia followed by dysphagia, and acute postoperative pain was the most frequent reason for 30-day readmission.
