Habitual preoperative dietary fiber intake and complications after colorectal cancer surgery
JAMA Jun 22, 2021
Kok DE, Arron MNN, Huibregtse T, et al. - This cohort study was undertaken to determine whether and how preoperative dietary fiber consumption is related to risk of complications post-surgery for colorectal cancer. From the Colorectal Longitudinal, Observational Study on Nutritional and Lifestyle Factors study, data were obtained. A 204-item food frequency questionnaire was applied to evaluate habitual dietary fiber intake. This study involved 1399 patients with colorectal cancer who underwent surgery. Findings revealed a lower risk of postoperative complications in relation to higher habitual dietary fiber intake prior to surgery. This implies that improving preoperative dietary fiber consumption may be given consideration as an intervention in future prehabilitation programs for colorectal cancer patients receiving surgery.
