Grip strength in children with chronic kidney disease

Pediatric Nephrology Mar 29, 2020

Hogan J, Schneider MF, Pai R, et al. - Among children and adolescents suffering from chronic kidney disease (CKD), researchers quantified the link between grip strength (GS) and kidney function as well as identified the factors related to grip strength. Participants were selected from the Chronic Kidney Disease in Children (CKiD) study and included 411 children (699 GS evaluations) in total. These were matched by age, gender, and height to a healthy control from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey, to quantify the link between GS and CKD. Findings revealed a link of CKD with impaired muscle strength in children; this link was independent of growth retardation and BMI. Impaired muscle strength was observed in relation to exposure to CKD for a prolonged time. Growth retardation, acidosis, poor nutritional status, and low physical activity were identified as the potential mediators of the influence of CKD on muscle strength.
