Gradual withdrawal of remifentanil delays initial post-operative analgesic demand after thyroid surgery; double-blinded, randomized controlled trial
BMC Anesthesiology May 02, 2019
Saxena S, et al. - Researchers investigated if a gradual vs abrupt withdrawal of remifentanil in patients who underwent thyroid surgery was associated with less immediate post-operative pain. They randomized 34 patients undergoing thyroid surgery and the study was completed by 29 patients. Findings revealed the safety of a gradual withdrawal of remifentanil post-thyroid surgery, as well as its relation to a delayed initial post-operative requirement of analgesic drugs, however, no changes were evident in overall morphine consumption, numeric rating scale scores, Ramsay Sedation Scale scores, and quality of recovery scores. There is a need for vigilance and training for the withdrawal process.
