Glycemic control and comprehensive metabolic risk factors control in older adults with type 2 diabetes
Experimental Gerontology Sep 08, 2019
Yan ST, Jia JH, Lv XF, et al. - Among older adults (n = 2,736; aged 60 to 90 years) with type 2 diabetes, researchers focused on comprehensive metabolic risk factors control, including the control of hemoglobin A1c (HbA1c) level, blood pressure, serum lipids level, serum uric acid level, and body mass index. The participants were recruited from 114 hospitals across 22 provinces in China. Metabolic abnormalities were recorded. HbA1c < 7% was considered as the target glycemic control. The glycemic control rate was estimated to be 23.0% and the comprehensive metabolic risk factors control rate was 4.6%. The increase in the number of metabolic abnormalities was accompanied by a decrease in the number of risk factor targets achieved. In this patient population, particularly in those with co-existing metabolic abnormalities, there is an urgent need for a strategy for comprehensive control.
