Glucose tolerance levels and circumpapillary retinal nerve fiber layer thickness in a general Japanese population: The Hisayama Study

American Journal of Ophthalmology Apr 11, 2019

Fujiwara K, et al. - Authors researched the association of glucose tolerance levels with circumpapillary retinal nerve fiber layer thickness (cpRNFLT) among 2809 Japanese community-dwellers of age 40–79 years in this population-based, cross-sectional study. They observed that the prediabetes or diabetes mellitus cases had significantly lower age- and sex-adjusted mean cpRNFLT values as compared to those with normal glucose tolerance. A significant decline in age- and sex-adjusted mean values of cpRNFLT with elevating fasting plasma glucose and 2-hr postload glucose levels were reported. In addition, they found the association of coexistent poorer glucose tolerance and higher intraocular pressure levels with thinner cpRNFLT.
