Glucosamine and chondroitin supplements and risk of colorectal adenoma and serrated polyp
Cancer Epidemiology, Biomarkers & Prevention Oct 20, 2020
Lee DH, Cao C, Zong X, et al. - Given that an inverse link has been demonstrated between use of glucosamine and chondroitin supplements and colorectal cancer risk, but a link with the precursor lesion, colorectal adenoma and serrated polyp, has not been assessed, so researchers analyzed 43,163 individuals who reported on glucosamine/chondroitin use in 2002 and who then received ≥ 1 lower gastrointestinal endoscopy. These persons were selected from the Nurses' Health Study (NHS), Health Professionals Follow-up Study and NHS2. According to the findings, lower risks of high-risk and overall conventional adenoma were observed in relation to glucosamine/chondroitin use in older adults; this link was not seen in younger women, or for serrated polyps.
