GLP overexpression is associated with poor prognosis in chronic lymphocytic leukemia and its inhibition induces leukemic cell death

Investigational New Drugs Sep 16, 2018

Alves-Silva JC, et al. - Since dysregulation of the heterodimeric methyltransferases GLP (EHMT1/KMT1D) and G9a (EHMT2/KMT1C) activity has been implicated in several types of human cancer, researchers examined a cohort of 50 patients to evaluate the influence, if any, of GLP/G9a on chronic lymphocytic leukemia (CLL) by analyzing the expression levels of GLP/G9a and also verified the effects of their inhibition on CLL cell viability. The transcriptional levels of GLP/G9a in CLL patients were also assessed. Findings suggested a link between GLP and worse prognosis in CLL. Also, CLL cell viability was affected by the inhibition of GLP/G9a. Overall, these results suggested the potential of these methyltransferases to be markers for disease progression. Furthermore, these could potentially be a promising epigenetic target for CLL treatment and the preventing disease evolution.
