Global prevalence of hypertension in children: A systematic review and meta-analysis

JAMA Oct 16, 2019

Song P, Zhang Y, Yu J, et al. - In this systematic review and meta-analysis of 47 articles, researchers evaluated the prevalence of hypertension in the general pediatric population. In children 19 years and younger, the pooled prevalence was 4.00%, 9.67%, 4.00%, and 0.95% for hypertension, prehypertension, stage 1 hypertension, and stage 2 hypertension, respectively. In subgroup meta-analyses, when measured via aneroid sphygmomanometer and in overweight and obese children, the prevalence of childhood hypertension was greater. A trend of the rising predominance of childhood hypertension was noted during the past two decades. In 2015, the prevalence of hypertension varied from 4.32% to 3.28% among children aged 6 years and those aged 19 years and plateaued at 7.89% in those aged 14 years. This study gave a global estimation of childhood hypertension predominance on the basis of blood pressure measurements in at least 3 separate visits. Further, more high-quality epidemiologic examinations on childhood hypertension are still required.
