Global prevalence of diabetes in active tuberculosis: A systematic review and meta-analysis of data from 2·3 million patients with tuberculosis
The Lancet Global Health Mar 20, 2019
Noubiap JJ, et al. - In view of the observation that the risk of tuberculosis and tuberculosis treatment outcomes are adversely affected by diabetes and poor glycaemic control, researchers determined the prevalence of diabetes among patients with tuberculosis at global, regional, and country levels via performing a systematic review and meta-analysis. Screening 7565 records, they included 200 studies (2 291 571 people with active tuberculosis) in this meta-analyses. As per outcomes, patients with active tuberculosis display a high burden of diabetes, with disparities according to age, sex, regions, level of country income, and development. They noted diabetes with a pooled prevalence of 15·3%, varying from 0·1% in Latvia to 45·2% in the Marshall Islands. This study suggests the necessity for cost-effective strategies to curb the burden of diabetes among patients with active tuberculosis.
