Global patterns of Hodgkin lymphoma incidence and mortality in 2020 and a prediction of the future burden in 2040
International Journal of Cancer Jan 29, 2022
Researchers analyzed worldwide patterns of Hodgkin lymphoma (HL) in 2020 and predicted the future incidence as well as death burden in 2040 using IARC’s GLOBOCAN estimates of the number of new cases and deaths of HL in 185 countries. The results of this study offer a baseline and impetus for creating strategies focused on attenuating the burden of HL in future decades.
In 2020, new cases of HL and deaths from HL were estimated to be 83,000 and 23,000, respectively.
Across world regions and countries, consistently higher incidence and mortality rates were reported among males (50% more cases and deaths compared with females).
Remarkable variations in incidence rates were seen by world region, at least 10-fold in both genders, with the highest incidence rates noted in Southern Europe.
Mortality showed an inverse pattern than incidence, with rates increased in Western Asia and Northern Africa.
According to predictions, the number of HL incident cases is going to increase to around 107,000 cases (a 30% rise) by 2040 because of demographic changes, assuming global rates in 2020 remain unaltered.
