Global grey matter volume in adult bipolar patients with and without lithium treatment: A meta-analysis

Journal of Affective Disorders Evidence based | Sep 04, 2017

Sun YR, et al. – For this meta–analysis, the clinicians aimed to quantitatively review the evidence available on the differences in grey matter volume between lithium–treated and lithium–free bipolar patients. They observed that global grey matter volume was significantly larger in lithium–treated bipolar patients compared to lithium–free patients. They added that further study of the association between lithium and grey matter volume might explain the therapeutic potential of lithium in conditions characterized by abnormal changes in brain structure.
