Global estimates of incidence of type 1 diabetes in children and adolescents: Results from the International Diabetes Federation Atlas, 10th edition
Diabetes Research and Clinical Practice Dec 09, 2021
Ogle GD, James S, Dabelea D, et al. - The 10th edition of the International Diabetes Federation Atlas estimated T1D incidence in 2021 for 215 countries/territories (“countries”).
Researchers sourced and graded studies on T1D incidence for young people aged 0–19 years.
As per estimates, diagnosis will be made in 108,300 children under 15 years in 2021; when the age range extends to under 20 years, the number rises to 149,500.
In some countries in sub-Saharan Africa, North Africa/Middle East, and in Mexico, a particularly high ratio of incidence was observed in 15–19 years when compared with those aged 0–14 years.
The incidence data were available for only 97 countries; extrapolation was required for some very populous nations.
Overall, recent data were available for many countries but large gaps exist globally.
