Ghrelin and peptide YY change during puberty: Relationships with adolescent growth, development, and obesity
Journal of Clinical Endocrinology & Metabolism Aug 12, 2018
Cheng HL, et al. - In this three-year prospective cohort study, researchers quantified ghrelin and peptide YY (PYY) change relative to pubertal growth by analyzing data of 80 healthy adolescents enrolled at 10 to 13 years. According to the findings, adolescents exhibited a U-shaped change in ghrelin, which corresponded to physical and biochemical markers of growth. It was noted that PYY revealed no age-related change in either sex. The U-shaped ghrelin trend was apparently lost in the overweight and obesity subgroup. Data revealed that neither ghrelin nor PYY was related to Tanner stage. Weight subgroup analyses demonstrated significant ghrelin relationships with age2 in healthy-weight, but not overweight and obese, adolescents.
