Geographic disparities in US veterans’ access to cochlear implant care within the Veterans Health Administration system
JAMA Otolaryngology-Head & Neck Surgery Oct 23, 2019
Shayman CS, et al. - Using the nationwide American Community Survey data collected by the US Census Bureau from January to December 2016, which were accessed in 2017, researchers conducted an analysis of census tract–level data to examine geographic disparities in access to cochlear implant (CI) care within the Veterans Health Administration (VHA) system for US veterans. More than 80% of veterans in 7 states resided more than 180 miles from the nearest VHA facility providing CI services, including sites that offer only audiologic services, in this analysis of census tract–level data on 19.9 million US veterans. With access to CI treatment, veterans living in both rural and large urban centers face several geographic limitations. Findings suggested that additional avenues within the VHA system to provide CI services can help provide adequate and accessible care for hearing loss veterans.
