Genotypic determination of resistance and heteroresistance to clarithromycin in Helicobacter pylori isolates from antrum and corpus of Colombian symptomatic patients

BMC Infectious Diseases Jun 26, 2019

Arévalo-Jaimes BV, et al. - With the rise of strains resistant to clarithromycin, the effectiveness of Helicobacter pylori first-line treatment had been drastically reduced, so researchers examined H. pylori isolates from antrum and corpus of Colombian patients for resistance and heteroresistance to clarithromycin. From antrum and corpus biopsies of 63 symptomatic patients over 18 years old who had a gastric endoscopy, they retrieved the study material, including 126 isolates. Resistance to clarithromycin was noted in 38.1% (24/63 patients) indicating a high prevalence of H. pylori clarithromycin-resistance. This emphasizes the necessity that the current eradication regimen for H. pylori in this population be reconsidered. As per data gained, they suggest considering heteroresistance status additionally in the assessment of resistance; they advise examining at least two biopsies from different gastric segments.
