Genetic imbalance is associated with functional outcome after ischemic stroke

Stroke Jan 25, 2019

Pfeiffer D, et al. - In this study involving 816 CADISP (Cervical Artery Dissection and Ischemic Stroke Patients) patients and 2,498 SiGN (Stroke Genetics Network)/GISCOME (Genetics of Ischaemic Stroke Functional Outcome) patients, researchers examined the impact of genetic imbalance on functional outcome following ischemic stroke (IS). Increased genetic imbalance correlated with less favorable outcome in both samples, as seen in multivariate logistic regression analysis, and this correlation was independent of age, sex, stroke severity on admission, stroke subtype, and ancestry. This relationship was driven by the presence of ohnologs in the respective copy number variations, implying a causal role of the deleterious effects of genetic imbalance.
