Genetic determinants of weight loss after bariatric surgery

Obesity Surgery Apr 25, 2019

Aasbrenn M, et al. - Researchers genotyped patients with morbid obesity who had Roux-en-Y gastric bypass (n = 577) surgery to examine how three genetic risk scores influence the inter-individual disparities in excess body mass index loss (EBMIL) following Roux-en-Y gastric bypass. In addition, among known adiposity-related single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs), genetic determinants of the inter-individual disparities in excess body mass index loss (EBMIL) were assessed. They calculated two genetic risk scores for weight loss following bariatric surgery and one for body mass index. Findings indicate there is a correlation between a genetic risk score and EBMIL following bariatric surgery, however, in clinical practice, these may not yet be applicable. Lower weight loss after bariatric surgery was observed among patients genetically inclined to low body mass index. Through lasso regression, EBMIL was noted to be correlated to 13 adiposity-related SNPs.
