Genetic determinants of glycemic traits and the risk of gestational diabetes mellitus

Diabetes Oct 02, 2018

Powe CE, et al. - Researchers examined genetic variants known to be associated with glycemic traits and type 2 diabetes (T2D) in the general population to determine possible associations with glycemic traits in pregnancy and gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM). For this investigation, study participants in two cohorts (Gen3G and HAPO) had oral glucose tolerance testing at 24-32 weeks gestation. The investigators noted a weak association of fasting insulin genetic risk score (GRS) with fasting insulin (Gen3G) or C-peptide (HAPO). The study findings suggested that genetic determinants of fasting glucose, fasting insulin, insulin secretion, and insulin sensitivity discovered outside of pregnancy may influence GDM risk regardless of the profound changes in glycemic physiology during pregnancy.
