Generalized pain sensitization and endogenous oxytocin in individuals with symptoms of migraine: A cross-sectional study
Headache: The Journal of Head and Face Pain Nov 06, 2017
You DS, et al. - In individuals with migraine, researchers assessed pain and neurogenic inflammation responses to topical capsaicin during the interictal period (between headache) and their relationship with plasma oxytocin. As per findings, during interictal periods, these individuals exhibit enhanced extracephalic capsaicin-induced pain unpleasantness and flare responses. Migraineurs, especially those with chronic migraine, also indicated slightly elevated interictal oxytocin levels compared to controls, which was associated with their affective component of experimental pain. Therefore, a reduction in generalized pain in migraine could be achieved with treatment targeting affective pain during the interictal period. In addition, researchers recognized that endogenous increases in oxytocin could be a compensatory mechanism that might help decrease affective distress in migraineurs. By reducing their affective distress, the therapeutic effects of intranasal oxytocin might benefit migraineurs.
