General anesthesia for transcatheter aortic valve replacement: Total intravenous anesthesia is associated with less delirium as compared to volatile agent technique
Journal of Cardiothoracic and Vascular Anesthesia Jan 19, 2018
Goins AE, et al. - In this study, postoperative delirium and length of stay were retrospectively compared among patients who received either volatile anesthesia or total intravenous anesthesia while undergoing transcatheter aortic valve replacement under general anesthesia. Even after adjusting for procedure approach, total intravenous anesthesia was found to be associated with lower odds of delirium as compared with volatile anesthesia, however, hospital or intensive care unit length of stay did not differ significantly between both groups. These data suggest that in this patient population, the type of general anesthetic maintenance may contribute to the incidence of postoperative delirium, and total intravenous anesthesia may be an attractive alternative to volatile-based general anesthesia maintenance.
