Gender differences in the risk of stroke after mechanical circulatory support

Blumer V, et al. – There have been concerns regarding the incidence of stroke after mechanical circulatory support (MCS), and some studies have suggested that female gender is a risk factor for the development of neurological complications. In this current study, researchers reported that risk of cerebrovascular events and in–hospital mortality after MCS implantation was greater in women versus men. In addition, as per their observations, cerebrovascular events were more commonly described after extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO) and least commonly described after IABP.
