Gender differences in outcomes for out-of-hospital cardiac arrest in the United States
Resuscitation Apr 06, 2021
Kotini-Shah P, Del Rios M, Khosla S, et al. - Researchers aimed at evaluating gender differences in rates of survival to hospital admission, survival to hospital discharge, and favorable neurological outcome (ie, without severe neurological disability) after OHCA in the US. A total of 326,138 adults with an OHCA were identified from 2013 to 2019 within the national Cardiac Arrest Registry to Enhance Survival (CARES) registry. Of these patients, 117,281 (36%) were women. For men and women, median age was 62 and 65 years, respectively. Findings revealed more favorable cardiac arrest characteristics in men with OHCA relative to women with OHCA. However, men less frequently survived to hospital admission, survived to discharge, or had favorable neurological survival.
