Gender differences in blood pressure after stroke: A systematic review and meta-analysis
Journal of Hypertension Sep 06, 2019
Li J, Yang SC, Moullaali TJ, et al. - Researchers sought to report on blood pressure (BP) differences among men and women at the time of acute stroke presentation, including stratification by prior history of hypertension and stroke subtype. Searching MEDLINE and Embase, 128,138 stroke patients from 43 studies were included. They observed higher SBP at the time of presentation among women with acute stroke. These differences are consistent with gender disparities in hypertension patterns in older age. The higher likelihood of women to have premorbid hypertension may explain these differences. The necessity for effective sex-specific blood pressure control in patients at high risk for stroke is thus emphasized in his work.
