Gender differences among participants in the Latin American Stroke Registry
Journal of the American Heart Association Feb 26, 2020
Arauz A, Serrano F, Ameriso SF, et al. - Since there is a scarcity of reports on gender disparities in stroke outcome and risk factors in Latin America, researchers examined clinical as well as prognostic variations according to gender in participants in the LASE (Latin American Stroke Registry). Across Central and South America, 19 centers gathered data about demographics, vascular risk factors, clinical stroke description, ancillary tests, and functional results at short-term follow-up of patients included from January 2012 to January 2017. Overall 4,788 patients with a median in-hospital stay of 8 days were examined, including 2,677 males (median age, 66 years) and 2,111 females (median age, 60 years). In females, vs males in the LASE, a worse functional outcome and higher mortality rates were reported, corroborating gender disparities issues at short-term follow-up.
