Gender difference and laterality of sleep position
Auris Nasus Larynx Sep 02, 2017
Ichijo H, et al. – The experts undertook this study to compare the frequency of position shifts during sleep between men and women, to illustrate any differences in sleep position between men and women as well as to clarify the laterality of sleep position. They reported that body position and the number of position shifts during sleep differ considerably between individuals. However, no gender difference in the frequency of position shifts was observed. Although the supine type was more common than the lateral type, there was no gender difference in sleep position. These findings clarify that the higher incidence of benign paroxysmal positional vertigo (BPPV) in women was not associated with sleep. Moreover, they found that in both genders, the right–dominant type occurs more than the left–dominant type. This might be related to the predominant involvement of the right ear in BPPV.
