Gender-dependent association of diabetes mellitus with mortality in patients undergoing transcatheter aortic valve replacement
Clinical Research in Cardiology Jun 29, 2018
Linke A, et al. - In this observational study of all consecutive patients treated with a transfemoral transcatheter aortic valve replacement (TAVR) in a single-center cohort, researchers determined the gender-dependent association of diabetes mellitus (DM) with all-cause 3-year mortality in these patients. Relative to males without DM and females both with and without DM, males with DM had substantially higher 3-year mortality. Therefore, among patients undergoing TAVR, males with DM are a high-risk subgroup requiring close medical attention, including aggressive therapy of modifiable risk factors. To achieve improved long-term survival after TAVR, implementation of increased diabetes management could be useful.
