Gastrointestinal Symptoms and outcomes in hospitalized COVID-19 patients
Digestive Diseases Jul 05, 2020
Ramachandran P, Onukogu I, Ghanta S, et al. - This study was attempted to evaluate whether GI symptoms could be applied for prognostication in hospitalized patients with COVID-19. Between March 18, 2020, and March 31, 2020, researchers retrospectively examined individuals admitted to a tertiary medical center in Brooklyn, NY, with COVID-19. At admission, the patients’ medical charts were examined for the presence of GI symptoms, including nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, and abdominal pain. They compared COVID-19 patients with GI symptoms (cases) with COVID-19 patients without GI symptoms (control). This analysis enrolled a sum of 150 hospitalized COVID-19 patients, of which 31 (20.6%) patients had at least one or more of the GI symptoms (cases). This study's findings indicate that at the time of admission, the presence of GI manifestations in COVID-19 was not correlated with increased mortality, LOS, or mechanical ventilation.
